The brown lines on the map are "contour lines". On this map they are spaced so that if you walked from one to the next you would change 20 feet in elevation.
When the lines appear very close together, as just left of the word Fairview, this means that the terain is very steep.	When the lines appear as a closed circle ( well maybe not so round ) this indicates a flat area.
