General Meeting November 16, 2005 Meeting Minutes Meeting called to order at 6:30pm. Old businessThe final preparations for the “Fair in the Square” were discussed and set. Brian, Anne, Geordie, Theresa and Seymour volunteered to man the booth. Theresa is going to bring samples of native and non-native plants from the reservation. The fair is Saturday 12/3/05 from 12-5pm.
New businessThe next agenda item discussed was an assessment of the cyclocross bike race that took place on the Hilltop in October. This race was authorized by the county and was the first time in approximately 10 years that permission was given to allow off road biking in a county park. There was a very low turnout of racers and people watching. The multiple weekend race ultimately had to be cut short due to insurance issues. The conservancy decided that if we allow this race to continue in years to come certain guidelines would have to be followed. One of the main goals for the conservancy right now is exposure. If an event is held on the Hilltop we need to promote the fact that the park is open for recreation. This race did not promote the Hilltop at all. The issue of the cyclocross will be an agenda item for early 2006 so we can decide what guidelines need to be followed or if we want this race to take place at all in the park.Several clean up days were held to remove debris from the meadow restoration site. Overall about 16 volunteers came out to lend a hand and get down and dirty. Old pipes, rebar cable, bottles/cans, old light fixtures were just a few of the items removed from the site. Most of the loop area has been cleaned out and ready for the next step in the restoration process. We are waiting on the county to remove the big debris piles. The lower 2½ acres of the restoration site still needs to be cleaned up. This will most likely take place in the spring. Thanks to everyone who lent a hand.
Upcoming events:December 14th -monthly meeting followed by a full moon night hike Meeting starts at 6:30. Hike starts at 8:00 at the Hillcrest St access.
Miscellaneous itemsThe issue of ATV use on the Hilltop was brought up. The county has been made aware of the situation and random visits are made from the county police. The group agreed more action has to be taken. The idea of distributing flyers to the surrounding streets of the Hilltop was talked about. The ATV riders are local riders who take local streets to get up to the park. The flyers would be a reminder that motorized vehicle use is strictly prohibited in county parks and that tickets/fines will be handed out when caught. The idea of adding more “ no motorized vehicle” signs was also brought up. This will be an on going issue for the conservancy.Geordie brought a sample of a plastic composite that can be used for trail signs. The composite is two colors( the outside and the core). The composite can be routered to reveal the core color and really make trail markers stand out. Geordie was looking into price costs and comparisons to other materials. Trail signage is a top priority for the conservancy so we can establish a foothold on the protected land before any development begin Meeting adjourned at 8:00pm.
