Hilltop Conservancy
General Meeting
December 14, 2005
Meeting Minutes

Meeting called to order at 6:30pm.

The cold weather and looming holidays kept attendance down at the meeting. Hopefully the new year will bring mild weather and a renewed interest to the conservancy and it’s members. Next year is going to be a big year for the reservation and the conservancy. With development to begin, we need to be the eyes and ears of the reservation to make sure all protected land stays that way.

The first item of business conducted was nominations for the executive officer positions for 2006. Ken Bogert was nominated, and it was seconded for the position of President. Theresa Trapp was nominated, and it was seconded to for the position of Treasurer. The Vice President and Secretary positions are open with no pending nominations. An e-mail will be sent to all members to try to reaffirm the importance of having individuals nominated for these positions. Anyone interested in nominating or volunteering is welcome to do so. Please contact the group with nominations.

It was discussed to send out a press release of the conservancy’s 2005 accomplishments. Much has been done this past year and a press release will not only keep people up to speed on what has happened, it may also rejuvenate members to become more involved. We need all the help we can get to keep moving forward.

Old business

A review of the “Fair in the Square” was the next item on the agenda. This is the second year the conservancy has participated in the fair and overall it was a success. Our event booth showcased overhead maps of the reservation, historical pictures of the Hilltop, conservancy events on the Hilltop, native and non-native plant arrangements and informational flyers and trail maps. People once again were drawn to the overhead maps trying to find local landmarks. The most talked about topic was development on the Hilltop. There are many people who still are not aware that there is a 215 acre park that will not be developed. This is a good venue for the conservancy to spread our mission statement and get more people to use the park.

The last agenda item talked about was trail development. The last couple of trail blazing sessions has started to pull many of the trails together from the last two years worth of work. The idea is to connect all the trails and have them mapped on GPS so we can start working on trail signage. GPS mapping will enable us to have accurate mileage on all trails. The Rotary Club of Cedar Grove has approved funding for trail signage for the reservation. The conservancy needs to send the Rotary a planned proposal for signage. We talked about signage not only on trails but also at several access points. Trail signage will give us a foothold in the reservation and may deter developers from infringing on protected land. Let’s hope it works.

The conservancy meeting was held earlier to accommodate a full moon hike in the reservation.

Meeting adjourned at 8:00pm.
