2007 Report of Activities and Accomplishments

    Held Reservation Events:
  • Girl Scout Community service activity - January
  • Forest Avenue School hike – April
  • Honeybee presentation and demonstration by Joseph LeLinho, Hilltop Honey – May
  • Family Hike / Bike Ride – June
  • Bird walk led by Phoebe Epstein of the Wild Bird Center, West Caldwell – June
    Improved Trails Network:
  • Joined the NY NJ Trails Conference – February
  • Held trail maintenance events – April, October
  • Member Pat Porcaro won Essex County Trails Keep award – June
    Participated in Local Events:
  • Montclair Backyard Habitat Fair – April
  • Earth Day and OctoberFest at the Essex County Environmental Center – April and October
    Continued Local Awareness Raising Efforts:
  • Updated and distributed brochures – ongoing
  • Developed prototype for ‘Hilltop postcards’ to be used as fundraiser and/or communications
  • Produced aerial photo enlargements for posting at events
  • Requested public information kiosk from County (received and being held pending placement in Reservation)
    Continued Meadow Restoration Project:
  • Additional meadow site clean-up & debris removal – April, November
  • Contributed to news article – May
  • Continued foreign invasive tree removal and weed control – May, October
    Continued Western Entrance Effort:
  • Received commitment from County to retain western entrance, and to relocate and resurface western route through Reservation
  • Continued work with KHovnanian / developers to mitigate trash and debris discarded by construction crews alongside N. Caldwell sites
  • Responded to seven dumping incidents. Dumper accessed Reservation through North Caldwell development sites. Shared pictures and information with KHovnanian, contiguous town officials, local and county police departments
  • Initiated regular patrols by Sheriff’s Department
  • Requested Reservation and “no dumping” signage for area where new Arbor Road intersects remaining old Sanatorium Road
    Continued Efforts to Establish Relationship with County Officials:
  • Completed formal partnership with County/Parks Department – April
  • Contacted and introduced Conservancy to district Freeholder representative Linda Lordi-Cavanaugh
