Geordie Smith Thank You

Geordie Smith recently resigned as a trustee with the Hilltop Conservancy to relocate to North Carolina.

Geordie became a trustee when the Hilltop Conservancy was created in December, 2003 and served as Vice President of Trails for the next 21 years.

When the reservation was formed Geordie and other volunteers began the long process to determine optimum routing for a durable and natural trail network. This resulted in 11 trails approved by the Essex County Parks Department who recognized the network with a trails keeper award. Geordie also invented and hosted the ‘Bike Hike’ event (pronounced Bikey Hikey) which welcomed all kids on bikes, trikes, scooters and most anything wheeled but unmotorized, with or without training wheels and even strollers. In recent years, Geordie organized a Grass Hopper race for all kids on bikes, K through 12th grade. These events led to increased visitation to the Hilltop from the local community.

Since that time, up until his recent departure, as Trails Captain Geordie has led a group of dedicated volunteers to maintain the trails for all to enjoy. In the absence of a volunteer joining the board to assume Geordie’s role, the group of volunteers he worked with will continue to maintain the trails including the handling of blockages caused by downed trees.

We thank Geordie for his years of service and wish him well in North Carolina.
