The Rotary Club of the Caldwells recently gifted a beautiful replacement panel for the interpretive history sign at the southern edge of our 15-acre grassland, which is traversed by the Meadow Trail. The original panel had been in place for 12 years and had degraded badly.
As many of you know, the sign tells the story of the Essex Mountain Sanatorium, which was built to help tuberculosis patients and others suffering from lung diseases. The sanatorium was completely torn down by 2002 and the site was restored to a wild meadow with warm season grasses and wildflowers.
The Hilltop Conservancy wishes to thank The Rotary Club and its members for this wonderful gift; The new panel is greatly appreciated. Members of The Rotary Club and the Hilltop Conservancy visited the site earlier this Spring to view the new panel and its installation.
